realthog: (real copies!)
[personal profile] realthog

Just learned that my anthology New Writings in the Fantastic (2007, Pendragon Press) has been longlisted for a BFSA (Best Anthology category; http://www.britishfantasysociety.org/news/?p=300#more-300).

I'm obviously mighty gruntled -- but even more so that two of the stories therein have been nominated in the appropriate category.

Step forward to receive a big hand:

Kate Riedel, for "Song Cycle"

Paul Pinn, for "Borderline Charm"

Here's rootin' for you both!

Many thanks, Doug -- but Kate and Paul P are the ones to shout about!

Congrats, Paul! I put your antho at the top of my "must-list"!

(Jeez but it's good to have you back, guy! I am so impressed with your intestinal fortitude and recuperative powers. They grow them tough in Scotland.)

Oh, and I forgot to tell you that I enjoyed reading "All the Little Gods We Are"! Good story!

Thanks for the good wishes, J! And I'm glad you enjoyed "All the Little Gods We Are" -- it's a favourite of mine, too.

I wouldn't overstate this. I'm pottering around the house doing, at best, little bouts of stuff before tiring and having to flop in an armchair. Pam's the one who's working her socks off at the moment.

Congrats. That's reason to be very gruntled indeed.

As noted above, the ones I'm really gruntled for are Kate and Paul P. Kate, especially, is close to the start of her career.

Thanks, C. I'm going to be e-mailing you tonight or tomorrow morning -- prolly the latter -- about Mongol.

Shouldn't we be at daggers drawn over this? Isn't Inferno on the list as well?

In the meantime, however, a grumpy CONGRATEROOS!!! to you as well.

Yes. But considering INFERNO wasn't published in the UK and is not in ANY UK bookstores (someone mentioned it's not even at FORBIDDEN PLANET) I don't think you've got any competition from it. But how many other British anthos are you competing against?

"But how many other British anthos are you competing against?"

About half a dozen, I think.

10--I just counted

Oh shit. So much for that, then.

A few are pretty obscure:
# A Hell of a Woman: An Anthology of Female Noir , [Ed] Megan Abbott, Busted Flush Press
Cthulhu’s Creatures, [Ed] Steve Lines & John B Ford, Rainfall Books
# Phobic: Modern Horror Stories, [Ed] Andy Murray, Comma Press

My bet for the winner is
# The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror 18, [Ed] Stephen Jones, Robinson

Actually, I quite fancy this one, and hope to pick up a copy at Fantasycon. I'd assumed, though, that Busted Flush was a US house.

It'll be interesting to see if this is so. It's been a few years since Steve's pulled off a BFSA with one of these.

Haven't heard of it at all, which is why I assume it's Brit...brb after I google.
It is American--out of Houston. Sorry I'd never heard of the book or I would have covered it for YBFH last year. Came out in December...It's gotten very little play over here.

Re: Best New Horror--perhaps not. It'll be interesting to see what wins.

WOWIE! They're reprinting Mitchell Smith's terrific prison novel STONE CITY. I've been raving about it since it was published in 1990.

That's ringing bells. I think I tripped over their website at some point and did quite a lot of chops-licking at the stuff on offer.
