. . . our Supreme Court started to do their job of protecting the interests of the US public rather than those of the ruling political party, to which most of them belong:

* US court approves voter ID laws *
The US Supreme Court rules that states can continue to require voters to show photo identification in order to vote.

I think the word I'm looking for is "treason". How sad when the highest judges in the land can legitimately be accused of it -- of the active effort to destroy US democracy.

The Avenue Pub, in the lower Garden District right on St. Charles. I was there almost 10 years. Do you -- or did you -- live there?

Did and do. But I'm downtown (live in the Marigny). You might remember my old record store/vodou botanica, Louie's Juke Joint. It was directly below Rings of Desire on Decatur Street (in the Quarter). It's closed now.

Not to pry, but were you forced out by the storm or did you leave for other reasons? I have a lot of friends who weren't able to come back after the storm.

Paul, sorry for the use of your blog in this way. Will switch to messaging after this.

I lived in the Marigny for several months, and I do remember that store.

I left NO about two months before the storm. I got divorced and suddenly became a single parent. Not only did that mean I couldn't work nights anymore, it meant I had to move closer to family so I could have some help raising my daughter. I miss New Orleans in a visceral way; if I was alone, I'd be back there in a heartbeat. That city was damn good to me. I love it still.

Sorry to hear about the circumstances that led you away. But if you had to go (for whatever reason) you have to admit the timing was not too shabby -- especially since you have a child to look after. The evacuation was hell on my kids, so at least yours didn't have to go through that particular ordeal. Of course, I'm sure it was just all the more heartbreaking when what happened did happen, and having to see it on TV and all that.

Anyway, be assured that New Orleans will always be here, and will always be a welcoming place to those who love and miss her. Don't ever doubt these things. Take care of yourself and that little one, and come on back whenever you're ready. Things here are getting better, a little at a time.

All best wishes from home,
Louie
