. . . our Supreme Court started to do their job of protecting the interests of the US public rather than those of the ruling political party, to which most of them belong:

* US court approves voter ID laws *
The US Supreme Court rules that states can continue to require voters to show photo identification in order to vote.

I think the word I'm looking for is "treason". How sad when the highest judges in the land can legitimately be accused of it -- of the active effort to destroy US democracy.

Even more infuriating is the Democratic Congress/Senate's refusal to talk impeachment by now. Really, they should have got going on that the minute they captured majority status.

The Republican's didn't think twice about impeaching a president over a stained blue dress. Now we have a president who has been casually dismantling the constitution for years and yet the dems don't seem to be taking it all that seriously. I call this phenomenon "weenyism."

This isn't the first time the word "treason" and this Supreme Court have found themselves sharing a sentence, of course. Let's not forget Bush v. Gore in 2000. Vincent Bugliosi wrote a good book about it called None Dare Call It Treason.

Off topic, I notice on your profile that you used to tend bar in New Orleans. Which bar? Just curious.

The Avenue Pub, in the lower Garden District right on St. Charles. I was there almost 10 years. Do you -- or did you -- live there?

Did and do. But I'm downtown (live in the Marigny). You might remember my old record store/vodou botanica, Louie's Juke Joint. It was directly below Rings of Desire on Decatur Street (in the Quarter). It's closed now.

Not to pry, but were you forced out by the storm or did you leave for other reasons? I have a lot of friends who weren't able to come back after the storm.

Paul, sorry for the use of your blog in this way. Will switch to messaging after this.

I lived in the Marigny for several months, and I do remember that store.

I left NO about two months before the storm. I got divorced and suddenly became a single parent. Not only did that mean I couldn't work nights anymore, it meant I had to move closer to family so I could have some help raising my daughter. I miss New Orleans in a visceral way; if I was alone, I'd be back there in a heartbeat. That city was damn good to me. I love it still.

Sorry to hear about the circumstances that led you away. But if you had to go (for whatever reason) you have to admit the timing was not too shabby -- especially since you have a child to look after. The evacuation was hell on my kids, so at least yours didn't have to go through that particular ordeal. Of course, I'm sure it was just all the more heartbreaking when what happened did happen, and having to see it on TV and all that.

Anyway, be assured that New Orleans will always be here, and will always be a welcoming place to those who love and miss her. Don't ever doubt these things. Take care of yourself and that little one, and come on back whenever you're ready. Things here are getting better, a little at a time.

All best wishes from home,
Louie

Don't even get me started on this bs.

I'm trying to back off from this cesspit for a while, just for the sake of my personal mental and cardiac health. Gotta do it sometimes. It isn't that I don't care, believe me. Just sometimes retiring from it all for 5 - 10 days is a good thing, since I'm nobody with any power anyway.

Love, C.

"I'm trying to back off from this cesspit for a while"

I know exactly what you mean. But, every time I think of doing the same, I realize this is just exactly what the wingnuts want us to do . . .

I know exactly what you mean.

But then I think, "Yanno why they are wingnutz and I am not? Because I can and do and want to back off periodically. They -- never, and so they are miserable wingnutz, hollow marshmallows that can only be filled with hot air, and thus never pleased or satisfied."

Love, C.
