I've just had a scam email that started thus:

INVESTMENT MANAGER
LLOYD'S TSB BANK
P.O BOX 1000,
BX1 1LT ENGLAND,
UNITED KINGDOM.

Good day,

I wish to inform you that this letter is not a hoax mail and I urge you to
treat it serious.

I'm sure there was more, but . . .

New York Magazine's Daily Intel service has the whole horrific story of yet another way in which our fundamental freedoms are being subverted:

Halal Turkeys Are Tainting Thanksgiving, Says Pamela Geller

realthog: ("no such thing")

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] fledgist for pointing me at a Washington Post piece by Greg Sargent revealing that, when Christine O'Donnell's LinkedIn resume says

Christine O'Donnell's Education
Fairleigh Dickinson University 1989 -- 1993
Claremont Graduate University
Constitutional Government
University of Oxford
"Post Modernism in the New Millennium"

the truth of the matter is that she attended a one-month summer course run by an independent company called the Phoenix Institute, which rented space from Oxford University -- like other universities, Oxford rents facilities to outside bodies during the vacs to make a contribution to running costs.

So whether you describe O'Donnell's claim to have attended the University of Oxford as a lie or just a gross deception is a matter of choice. O'Donnell's own opinion seems to be that it's a lie, as she explained on Bill Maher's show:

O’DONNELL: A lie, whether it be a lie or an exaggeration, is disrespect to whoever you’re exaggerating or lying to, because it’s not respecting reality.

So she's been caught telling a whopper. It's a fair cop, guv.

Well, not according to her supporters, who appear to be too stupid to understand the old dictum about digging your way out of a hole. Here's "JakeD2", commenting on Sargent's story:

I'm still not sure where the "lie" is on this one. Ms. O'Donnell does not even claim to have "studied" simply listing where she did take a course under EDUCATION on some LinkedIn bio page. You libs sure are stretching

Later:

None of you have proven "a lie or an exaggeration" yet.

Still later:

Her listing "University of Oxford" under EDUCATION is a claim of attending and/or graduating from Oxford? I disagree (obviously).

And then:

I disagree with this too: If she had said "by Phoenix Institute at Oxford" she would be misleading.

A quick lesson in logic from JakeD2 (R2's brother?):

Since her detractors have yet to prove even a single "lie" I can tell you honestly that I think highly of her character.

And so on and on it goes. Meanwhile, in other news:

Report: Poor science education impairs U.S. economy
By Dan Vergano, USA TODAY

One thing a science education does is warn of the dangers and undesirability of intellectually corrupt sophistry -- that it is not to be confused with genuine logic, and that anyone of honesty will avoid its use. It might assist the US economy as much or more if those playing a part in our politics, from JakeD2's lowly level up to folk like Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin (and, for that matter, Christine O'Donnell), remembered it too.

Someone called "Anonymous" has just left a comment to my entry here which for some reason I can't get the LJ software to unscreen. Here is the comment in full:

Having read CORRUPTED SCIENCE, and in the light of the exposure of global warming as a HOAX, I want to know if you will be publishing a CORRUPTED SCIENCE II to expose the real corruption. This is the most agregious case of scientific corruption in human history.

And here is my mild-as-milquetoast voice-of-sweet-reason reply:

Only someone of extraordinary stupidity and complete scientific illiteracy would think that global warming has been shown to be "a HOAX" -- someone of stupidity, illiteracy, and an infantile desire to choose to listen only to what you regard as the more comforting of the stories coming your way. Does it ever cross your excessively tiny mind to wonder who's responsible for the lies you're so eager to believe?

You are very wise to remain anonymous. Because of the activities of halfwitted or corrupt AGW deniers such as yourself, there's a very good chance there won't be very much of the human species in just a few decades' time. Frankly, I don't give a monkey's fuck if your life is cut short by this disaster, but I do very much care about my daughter's future well-being. Anyone who threatens it has a very angry me to contend with. Got that?

Now go crawl back into your pit of ignorance, you idiotic little turd.

Oh, and learn to spell "egregious" while you're about it.

When Thog lose patience, patience know it been lost . . .
