US college sport authorities have fined Penn State University $60m (£39m) in the wake of child sex abuse perpetrated by a long-serving football coach.

The university - a famous US football school - will be banned from competing for honours for four years, and lose all wins from 1998-2011.

It's the last bit that's idiotic and -- in its assumption that history can merrily be rewritten -- frightening, I think. Sandusky's pederasty had nothing to do with Penn State's winning of those games. It is absolutely irrational to link the two -- not to mention ethically foul, in that it punishes the victorious players for Sandusky's crimes.

Apologies for how very infrequently I'm posting at the moment. I'm working flat-out on what may or may not end up being called The People's Encyclopedia of Film Noir at the moment, so extraneous matters like eating, sleeping, blog-posting and going to the lavatory are tending to be a bit sidelined.
