We have two wars going on, the economy's in difficulties, global warming is accelerating, unemployment is frighteningly high, "extreme weather events" are increasing in frequency, healthcare and education are in a shambles, working people are shouldering a higher ratio of the tax burden than ever before, unions are under attack, ACORN has been destroyed (who next? Oxfam?), poverty levels are obscene, and much, much more, and the US right thinks the most important item on the nation's political agenda is . . .
Anthony Weiner's penis.

Date: 2011-06-01 04:21 pm (UTC)He's a Democratic Congresscritter whose habit of telling the truth, forcefully, on the floor of the House infuriates Repugnicans, who prefer their lies to be "respected" as "different viewpoints". Recently his Twitter/Facebook account (I forget which) was hacked and used to send an unidentified Seattle woman (who promptly thereafter erased her own Twitter/Facebook account) a photo of a pair of boxer shorts with something very obviously upthrust within. Now Andrew Breitbart, a frightwing blogger with a track record of promoting stuff he knows to have been fabricated, is pretending this is a major scandal, and the wingnut echo chamber is following suit.
Weiner is laughing about it, mock-moaning about being buried under yet another avalanche of "weiner" jokes.

Date: 2011-06-01 05:42 pm (UTC)They are absolutely par for the course for the US Right at the moment, and no one is at all surprised by this latest saga. The trouble is that there's always a hefty chunk of the US populace who're too lazy and/or stupid to realize they're being manipulated by the peddlers of this garbage -- like the 25% or so who still believe Obama was born abroad.

Date: 2011-06-01 07:49 pm (UTC)And some of them are in the US mainstream news media who, instead of relegating this tosh to the same pages as UFO reports and sightings of Elvis, treat it as if it were important. Go to http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/01/weiner-cant-say-that-photo-is-not-him/?nl=us#preview to see the New York Times -- supposedly the US paper of record, for gawd's sake -- dancing like a puppet to Andrew Freitbart's stringpulling.
