it's not all bad news

One of the cheery things about my visit to BookExpo today was that, every time I passed the large-ish WND Press stand (i.e., the stand for the book wing of World Nuts Daily, full of Birther nonsense and even more venomous anti-Obama abuse), it was absolutely deserted except for a couple of depressed-looking staffers.

Date: 2011-05-26 04:20 pm (UTC)Some truly unbelievable books being hawked there, especially an entire volume about Obama's birth certificate.
That may have contributed to the lack of interest in their stand. The book has been a cause celebre among us students of wingnuttia. There was a lot of loud laughter when Obama issued the long-form cert just a couple of months before the book's planned publication, and even more when WND's Joseph Farah continued to insist that he still believed the book was authoritative. I suspect even an appreciable number of the wingnuts are beginning to realize WND's been selling them a crock o' the bad stuff.
Sorry we didn't run into you yesterday!

We go most years, for work purposes rather for straightforward fun -- although obviously there's the fun element too, not least all the FREEE-EEEE-EEE books! I kind of have mixed feelings about the fair, though. It annoys me that the organizers, after years of observing the food court needs more seating, still can't be bothered to do anything about it -- even though the free space is there. And the manufactured long lines for signings irk me as well, since they significantly and unnecessarily increase the congestion of already congested thoroughfares. And so on.
But we did some good business there this year, so overall I'm not complaining! :)

Date: 2011-05-26 08:58 pm (UTC)What cheered me wasn't even the left/right thing, although that was pleasing too, but more that it seemed people were uninterested in their stuff because at last they'd recognized it as both vile and profoundly dishonest -- a pack of venomous lies, in other words. The rejection of their rightwing opinions is one thing; the fact that people apparently wanted nothing to do with their plain falsehoods was another!
Or something.

Date: 2011-05-26 09:01 pm (UTC)Sorry you've been ill again, C! Hope you're both recovering, and will be returned to customary feistihood Real Soon.
We did actually keep an eye open at the fair in case we might spot you two. The fact that neither of us could remember the name of your publisher didn't help . . .
