Apparently Natalie Merchant has been working on a project for the past five or six years to set 19th- and early-20th-century poetry to music; the results will soon be released on a double CD called Leave Your Sleep. TED recently gave her the stage to preview a bunch of songs from this collection, and you can watch it -- or, at least, 27+ minutes of it, here.

It's fabulous stuff. I suspect TED's bandwidth is going to be getting a severe hammering over the next few days or weeks -- and that's just from me!

That unblinking mask she's wearing in the opener is hella disturbing, but holy cow, I might actually be able to tolerate her idiosyncratic voice if she's going to deliver songs like that. Thanks for the link!

Gotta confess, I like her voice -- and her music in general. At the moment I'm counting the pennies in my piggy bank to see if I can afford this set while at the same time wishing I could find somewhere online to listen to the damn' thing -- just in case, you know, it's one of those instances where a stripped-down live performance is better than the studio version!

I like her well enough in small doses, or in a mix with other artists. Just not an artist I listen to for the length of a whole CD.

Ha! I'm the exact opposite. When I put one of her CDs on I tend to play it nonstop for the next few days . . .

Hee! For that function, I have multiple Alison Moyet albums. :-) Talk about idiosyncratic voices. (Reposting--LJ seems to have eaten the previous attempt...)

It does. Yet I got e-mail notifications for both. Strange.

It's software, Jim. Just not software as we know it.

"Klingons on the starboard bow! Scrape 'em off, Jim!"

I suspect it's the difference between replying via email (first attempt) and replying on the journal (second).

That'll be it. I can't reply via e-mail at all -- LJ doesn't hook up properly with Thunderbird to allow it.

(Or is it that I use Firefox? I can't now remember. One of the two.)
