It's nearly Halloween. Make sure you're

Chilled to the Bone!

Is it the Villain Rather than the Hero who Makes a Thriller Thrill?

Where would Sherlock Holmes have been without Moriarty? Would we read about Harry Potter if there were no Lord Voldemort? Why is Hannibal Lecter so much better known than Agent Clarice Starling?

While we may root for the heroes, isn't it the villains who really grab us?

If you want to write stories that'll thrill readers, you need to know how to create villains who'll chill the soul – whether they're serial killers or the Dark Lords or corporate pirates or just exceptionally nasty great white sharks.

Five award-winning New Jersey novelists – writers of horror, mystery, fantasy and paranormal suspense – share their trade secrets in the Halloween Special presentation Chilled to the Bone, organized under the auspices of the West Milford Township Library.

I've also got a previously arranged appointment that afternoon (a fundraiser to help build two new classrooms for my high school as a matter of fact; donations would be appreciated), at which I expect to see people I haven't met since (ahem) 1973.

Better, but still not a valid excuse. Since 1973 you haven't met me, either.

As for the fundraising aspects, couldn't you just send them the money?
