The situation is definitely ludicrous - but I do the same. Whenever there is big news about the US, I turn to BBC...
But what I love most are the cultural programs. There was a show called "The Museum", about the British Museum, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It combined human interest with actual learning without slipping into least-common-denominator reality show status.
