I do hope you're right about publishers wanting something different. I have a few "different" manuscripts on the market right now.
No, nothing wrong with a page-turner. My ratio's been about 40% since I stopped reading slush for Southern Fried Weirdness, but that's dropping down again now with me reading more "literary" books again. I just needed to read a few no-brainers after running the zine because sometimes wading through that slush pile was a lot of work. I wanted to turn off my editorial/critical eye for a little bit and just have fun with reading again. I had almost forgotten how to do that.
But here's the thing, getting back to the original post -- there should be some instances where art of any form is viewed and appreciated on a critical level. There needs to be some discernment out there among people or else the world threatens to be flooded with garbage -- kind of like You Tube. (Not that I don't enjoy watching videos of babies farting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJQU6x9qJko -- for your high brow viewing pleasure. No need for thanks. You are welcome.) All this technology at our disposal and this is how the masses use it -- for farting babies or dancing hamsters. It hurts to think about sometimes.

I think I need to watch that video again.
