two (countem, two!) mysteries solved

On a list called The Spammers, of which I'm lucky enough to be a part, there was cited a letter that was published in today's Philadelphia Inquirer:

I really would like to know exactly what books Sarah Palin wanted to ban from the Wasilla Public Library so I can read them before January.
             ----Cynthia First, Downingtown

Naturally, this prompted some discussion amongst us as to the identity of the dangerously offensive/tantalizingly obscene/treasonously seditious items, and it emerged that one of them was Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.

Huh? we all cried. What could possibly be offensive about To Kill a Mockingbird?

Step forward and take a bow, artist Ray Ridenour, with the obvious explanation:

Apparently it wasn't killed with a 30 ought 6 after an invigorating helicopter pursuit.

Actually, in truth, we don't know that. The ALA, which I will always take as the best source on books banned and libraries, cannot confirm that. The story appears to be that she held three meetings where she floated banning books, the librarian objected, she tried to intimidate and dismiss librarian, local power brokers stepped in and got the sp an administrator, because she was already involved with other disputes, and there was a strong movement to start the process of recall on her as mayor.

So the local power brokers got together with the state power brokers and they ran her for governor.

Nor is the librarian talking. Probably she or another family member(s) have been threatened with job loss or some other punishment if more is said.

Love, C.

Meanwhile, what did you think of Ray's joke? -- my reason for posting this entry.

Not a bad joke, of its kind.

The part where it is a mockingbird is wherein lies the irony.

That too!

I feel too glum about everything to find humor in anything that references killing animals from helicopters. Ray Ridenour nailed it, though.

To Kill a Mockingbird? Let's hope not. Regardless, it sucks that she was trying to ban books of any kind. What is this, Fahrenheit 451 ?!
