It's not just what you say in an online cricket commentary, it's the way you say it. Here's from the
cricinfo.com commentary on today's fourth One Day International between England and South Africa:

32.1
It is raining but the game continues

Broad to Botha, no run, very full outside off stump, Botha tries to paddle it away but misses

He's paddling because of the rain, right?

As it were.

They'll have needed canoes down there today; it's been absolutely tipping down, on and off.

They were finally able to get a result (England won) through reducing the England innings to a 20-over knockabout and calculating the target using Duckworth-Roe (or whatever it's called). It all sounds to have been absolutely dire until the last few overs, when Pietersen, Shah and especially Flintoff had a bit of fun, the latter desperate to get the thing over with before the heavens opened yet again.

I have sympathies for my pal Cameron, who was all excited the other day when someone gave him a ticket for the game. Unless he decided to heed the forecasters and stay at home, he must have had a miserable time of it . . . or, come to think of it, maybe he just got merrily smashed in the corporate tent!

It's the Duckworth-Lewis Method, which sounds as though it ought to have a page in The Joy Of Sex, and which, from a quick check on Wikipedia, only Stephen Hawking can understand.

Actually, wouldn't The Duckworth-Lewis Method be a great title for a detective story?

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-09-01 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)

Inspector Duckworth and Sgt Lewis, you mean?

Actually, for reasons of Morsery, it'd have to be Inspector Lewis and Sgt Duckworth.

Oh. Damn. Of course there's the post-Morse tv series in which Lewis bloody is an inspector!

Back to the drawing broad (to use the term in the book you referenced).

Superintendent Lewis and Inspector Duckworth.

Hm . . . Of course, all of these problems would be avoided in a werewolf detective story called The Duckworth-Lupus Method . . .

[identity profile] hutch0.livejournal.com 2008-09-01 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
A werewolf detective story set around the Second Test at Lord's. That sounds like a plan, then.

Yep. The more I think about it, the more I like it. Do you want to do the opening chapter then?

Mind you, I can't see the US rights selling for a bundle . . . unless we can find an excuse to put Isa Guha on the cover . . .

Are you going to be at Fantasycon this year?

[identity profile] hutch0.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I would, if I knew the first thing about cricket. Who's Isa Guha, by the way?
I'm still not sure about FantasyCon. We get back from Poland on the Monday before it starts, and money's getting a bit tight. I'd like to because I'd like to see you both again and I'd love to heckle when New Writings wins the award it so richly deserves, but I'm still thinking about whether I can afford it to go.

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)

"Who's Isa Guha, by the way?"

I seem to recall you agreeing with me a few months ago that, on her own, she was a good reason for a chap to be a cricket fan.

"I'm still thinking about whether I can afford it to go"

It'd be great to see you two again as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed you win the lottery.

[identity profile] hutch0.livejournal.com 2008-09-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Isa Guha. Sorry, the name completely slipped my mind. Yes. Cor.
If I do manage to make it to Nottingham I'll be on my own; because we'll have been in Poland the previous weekend Bogna will have to work the weekend after we get back.
I too will be keeping my fingers crossed for the Lottery, but it hasn't worked so far.
