a Martian mermaid?

According to an article on the Beeb's website today (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7205004.stm), the baloneymongers are ablaze about a recently released NASA photo taken by the Spirit rover:

Photobucket

Yes, folks, there's something there that can only be a human figure . . . or a Bigfoot . . . or even a mermaid? My favourite of the suggestions the Beeb reports is that this is a member of an ancient Martian race that came to Earth and populated Denmark, where later they erected a statue of one of their number in Copenhagen . . .

Unfortunately for many of the theorists, the rock that's created the "human" illusion is only a few centimetres long.

This only reminds me of how keenly I still feel the loss of the Weekly World News.

Alas...I miss Bat Boy and the Elvis sightings SO MUCH.

*weeps*

Yes, it is awful, isn't it? At the supermarket checkout we're nowadays reduced to following the Brad'n'Angie saga.

It's a military aircraft!...no, it's a flock of birds!...no, it's Venus!...no, it's a weather balloon...!
Actually, I think the rock's a bit bigger than that; the Times had the panoramic pic this thing was isolated from and it seems a fair old distance away, although it's hard to tell.
Still, you're right; I can feel the Internet heating up with new discussion groups, swapping analyses and sketches and theories. There'll be magazines and meetings in pubs and conventions and books. Shares in tranquiliser companies are rising as NASA press officers contemplate decades of questions about this from people who want to know what they're hiding.

Them Martians must have been little buggers.

But perfectly formed.
