I understand why Obama might reach out to them as an opening gambit, but I fail to see why he would water down a much-needed bill to get even a single Repub vote. Or why he would continue to court them. I know that in DC "bipartisanship" is more valued than actually getting something done, but if the Republican party were marginalized for the rest of its natural lifetime, that would be kind compared to what they actually deserve for, you know, wrecking the country.
My fear is that Obama, like other Dems before him, has internalized the "must get along with the Rs at all costs" meme.
