sold: "Lives" (reprint)

The story of mine, "Lives", that appeared in Ellen Datlow's 2007 anthology Inferno has been bought for "reprint" by the UK electronic f/sf magazine The Hub.

I am, obviously, very pleased. The contract doesn't state when the story will be making its Hub appearance, but if you subscribe (it's free) to the ezine (follow above link) you'll find out about at the same time as I do . . . and you'll also have a weekly ration of other fiction popping cheerily into your inbox!

Thought Hub was currently closed to submissions?

[identity profile] nick-kaufmann.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, I love that story!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)

It reopened just a few weeks ago.

Thanks!

It's closed to submissions again! I have a rather large pile of stories to read tomorrow on a plane out to Orlando. :) Congratulations! At some point we'll really have to work on a system for letting people know when their stories will be going out.

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)

What're you off to Orlando for?

It's closed to submissions again!

It is? Well, dang! I'd just assembled a folder of 732 stories to send you . . .

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh, but see the correction below from Ellen of The Hub. Apparently they've closed for submissions again already!

[identity profile] ogre-san.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The Hub's a nice venue. Congrats!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)

Thanks!

*The Hub's a nice venue.*

I think so too!

[identity profile] sarcobatus.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Good news! Congrats!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)

Many thanks! How're you feeling, oh Quiet One?

[identity profile] fledgist.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
'Prolific' would seem an inadequate word to describe you.

[identity profile] fledgist.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)

Thanks!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh that this were still the case. I've slowed down a lot in recent years.

[identity profile] fledgist.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Define 'a lot', if you don't mind.

[identity profile] sarcobatus.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"How're you feeling, oh Quiet One?"

Not very ornery these days, I'm afraid. My husband just got laid-off from his job this week, and work in town has come to a screeching halt across the board. It's been doing this for about eight months now, with hotel and casino patronage cut by half. We expect it to get worse.

You know it's a bad sign for the economy when Plague Town slows down. Even the zombies are keeping low profiles.

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this! Fingers crossed he can buck the trend and find a replacement (and one that's fun to do!) Real Quick.

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)

Like, I doubt if I could write a novel in two or three weeks any more.

[identity profile] fledgist.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Now, that sounds like, ahem, Stephen King.

[identity profile] sarcobatus.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, P. His work is construction related. I doubt he'll have any luck, since the industry has come to a stand-still. He has DOD clearance, though, so maybe he can find something in government. As for fun, well, need I say more? Or less? bleh

[identity profile] douglascohen.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats! You know I like this story, since it led to our introduction. :)

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)

Many thanks, D!

"our introduction"

A good thing!

A conference (for my day job). I'm attending as a vendor, not as an attendee - I get to smile at people and offer them chocolate and demo our software. Or rather pass them along to my boss, who'll be mainly doing the demoing and answering the technical questions.

Well, dang! I'd just assembled a folder of 732 stories to send you . . .

Shucks! You'll just have to hang onto them until we reopen. We've actually got around 30 or so stories queued up to publish, with another 60-ish still to read through in the slushpile. Which is why we're shut again. We really do appreciate getting so many great stories in so quickly, but we have a limited budget so we can't afford to publish more than one story a week. Now, if people would only donate, we'd be able to buy more stories and pay our hard-working authors more money... /shameless plug

Thank you! *beam*

That is absolutely SUPER. In fact, the original sale was SUPER!

Yeah to my Dearest!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)

Why, thank you, ma'am!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)

Double thanks!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)

"I get to smile at people and offer them chocolate"

I imagine giving the chocolate away is going to be hell!

[identity profile] charlesatan.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)

Thanks, Charles!

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)

Well, I think it behoves you to go out at 4am and knock a few things down so they have to be reconstructed . . .

Joking aside, thinking lots about this. I do hope the troubles clear up soon.

Thanks, Paul. Actually, I think they might be clearing up already. He got on with another company this afternoon, starts work next Tuesday. He's been in this town long enough now that he's made a lot of connections, thank goodness. "With a little help from my friends," as the song goes. We're fortunate. Phew. Not so easy for others right now.

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 04:05 am (UTC)(link)

"He got on with another company this afternoon, starts work next Tuesday."

Oh, that's great! I'm so relieved!

"Not so easy for others right now."

You probably have said truer words from time to time, but none of us has done so all that often.

I feel sorry for people who are being laid-off and do not have alternative work lined up. Too many people live from pay-check to pay-check, always teetering on the edge of financial annihilation, homes repossessed, so on and so forth.

The interesting thing is, when I was young and owned nothing and drove an old old clunker of a car (I still drive an old clunker) I was a happier person.

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2008-10-18 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)

Thanks, JM!

"The interesting thing is, when I was young and owned nothing and drove an old old clunker of a car (I still drive an old clunker) I was a happier person."

Same here. As I'm sure you'll agree, the only cloud on the horizon was boring old farts telling us how much happier they'd been when they were our age and didn't have any money and . . .

:)
