RIP Barrington J. Bayley (1937-2008)

I heard the sad news from a UK friend this morning:

Barry died at 9pm yesterday.   He had recently undergone surgery for bowel cancer.   The cause of death has not yet been determined:  a post-mortem will be performed soon.

Many of us knew that Barry's health had been poor in recent years, so in a sense this wasn't too unexpected, but at the same time it comes as a shock. I knew him only slightly (we met just a couple of times, e-mailed occasionally), but liked what I knew. He was one of those authors who, alas, fail to receive the popular attention they so much deserve; his work was far, far better than the people who thought themselves chic to ignore it.

I'm so sorry that you have lost a friend.

No one has too many friends, despite what Audrey Hepburn stated in Charade.

Love, C.

I second that. I think I've only read a story or two of his. Still, the loss of a friend is always a painful, and a hard thing.

That's sad news. I only knew him by reputation and from a couple of his stories, but you're right, he deserved to be better-known.

My thanks for posting this.

The very least I could do. I suspect it'll be a few years yet before the field realizes the size of its loss.

There's also this (http://sfscope.com/2008/10/british-author-barrington-j-ba.html), which embarrassingly quotes much of my blog entry.
