quote of the day

"Every barrel of oil that comes out of those sands in Canada is a barrel of oil that we don't have to buy from a foreign source."

-- Rick Perry, speaking in Clarinda, Iowa

Hmm, if we could make oil from killing babies, I wonder if that would be acceptable, too...

Bah, Humbug! Why do those Republicans continue to flaunt their complete ignorance? There has to be more to it that greed for profit. They have to be just plain stupid!

I'm embarrassed to admit it took me a couple of seconds to figure out what was wrong with this. New England girl, you know.

Someone needs to explain to Governor Perry the meaning of these Canadian patriotic lines:

At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane,
Our brave fathers, side by side,
For freedom, homes and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died;
And those dear rights which they maintained,
We swear to yield them never!
Our watchword evermore shall be
"The Maple Leaf forever!"

The perils of not engaging brain fully before speaking. If you add one little word what he said makes sense, without it, he is an ignorant boob.

"...a barrel of oil that we don't have to buy for a HOSTILE foreign source."

Because I do like to think of Canadians as friends, myself.

A plausible explanation for Perry's gaffe, but not completely convincing: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq are the first few oil-producers that come to mind who're allies of ours.

Sure, unless they hadn't been born yet.

My guess is that much of the stupidity these politicians they don't believe themselves: they just figure that stupidifying the US public with a constant torrent of falsehood and misinformation will lead the nation to a state where our rulers can do exactly what they want because most of the electorate will be swallowing absolute nonsense while being engrossed in reality TV and the Living Frontline Hell of the War to Save Christmas.

I'm sure virtually no one in his audience noticed, as he continued speaking. It's the kind of thing that does take a second or two to register.

I think Perry's preferred anthems are more along the lines of "I wanna get back to Dixie, I wanna be a Dixie Pixie . . ."

[identity profile] fledgist.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect you're right.

Lordy, open mouth and put foot in BEFORE even THINKING of engaging brain.

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)

Engaging what? Surely you're making a rather rash assumption there?

[identity profile] realthog.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)

Happy New Year, by the way! I hope 2012 sees no more of your health scares.

[identity profile] fledgist.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy New Year to you.

And thanks, I hope so too!
